Milton's Rugby Great Gives To Charity

In 2013, Gold Coast sculptor, Liam Hardy, was commissioned to create a statue of Mal Meninga to stand in Suncorp Stadium. Mal Meninga, a Queensland Rugby League great, made 32 appearances for Queensland, played 46 tests for Australia with 23 as captain and has an unequalled record as Origin coach. Mr Hardy chose the Meninga of the mid-90s to immortalise outside of Suncorp Stadium and he will spend the next four months creating a solid bronze figure that will inspire dread in NSW players.

The 250kgs bronze sculpture cost $70,000 to create and Mr Hardy agreed to donate a percentage of his artist’s fee to a charity of Mr Meninga’s choice. The chosen charity is Sunshine Coast based Compass Institute Inc. and on the 23rd of September 2015, a cheque for $7,000 was presented by Mr Meninga to Compass Institute.

Compass Institute helps to provide real futures for young Queenslanders faced with intellectual and physical disabilities. The charity helps those with disabilities to learn to live unassisted and to find employment in the community.

Milton is the home of Suncorp Stadium and Queensland Rugby League and next time you visit the stadium don’t forget to give Mal a big high-five as you walk in the gates.
